Opening search

Search is a panel over whatever you are reading, not a page you travel to. Press Ctrl K — ⌘K on a Mac — from anywhere, or tap Search in the bottom bar on a phone or tablet.

Closing it returns you to the exact verse you were on. Nothing is lost and there is no list to find your way back to, because you never left the page.

Jumping to a reference

If you already know where you are going, type the reference and it appears at the top of the list. These are resolved on your device, so they answer as fast as you can type.

• A verse: 2:255
• A surah by number, name, meaning or Arabic name: 18, Al-Kahf, the cave, الكهف
• A hadith by collection and number: bukhari 1
• A collection by name: muslim

Searching for words

Results come back in two groups. The Quran group searches the translation you read in — change your translation and the search follows it. The hadith group runs over the full text of every hadith, narrator and body, ranked by relevance rather than by position in the collection.

Searching in Arabic searches the Arabic. A Quran result then highlights the matched word inside the verse itself rather than in a translation.

• Quote a phrase to require it exactly: "seek help through patience"
• Put a minus in front of a word to exclude it: patience -fasting
• Write or between alternatives: patience or perseverance
• Press Tab to narrow the list to the Quran or to the hadith

Why the count sometimes shows a plus

A common word matches thousands of hadith and nobody reads to result four thousand, so counting stops at a hundred. A result count shown as 100+ means the ranking is complete but the tally was capped.
